They are used over underfloor heating, to keep balconies and areas at the front of houses clean, or to make things cleaner and more civilised outdoors. When used as wall and floor features they can add a personal signature to home, or for courtyards, around fountains and pools, or in children's play areas. There are Italian look, traditional mosaic patterns or you can even create your own personalised designs! Tiles are also easier to keep clean and hardened surfaces wear well against plant pots and weighty items without marking into the surface the way lino, cork or wood can mark permanently from heavy objects which is why tiles are used more and more in every area of the home. Nonslip tiles can be chosen for wet areas as an added safety precaution for the family. Tiles can be themed to match and contrast existing designs and colours on walls and floors. Victorian restoration style tiles can add an authentic touch to your home. Photographs, poems and quotations can be specially painted onto feature tiles over a sink, kitchen stove or hand basin, including family crests, sea scenes or even a picture of your house! Glass tiles, mosaics, slate, travertine, or porcelain tiles as large as 60cm(2ft), patterns for splashbacks - the diversity of tiling possibilities is fairly limitless. Tiling and mosaic tiling are often used to create furniture inlays, chess boards and striking sculptures too. Play areas can be tiled in striking and joyful patterns in non-slip tile surfaces, while paving need not be limited to concrete style pavers but can incorporate a wide range of colourful outdoor mosaic and traditional or abstract designs. The history of mosaics goes back some 4,000 years or more, when the first pottery cones were placed into a into a background. People started to enjoy pebbles as pavements by about 800 BC, and people began to use different colour stones to make patterns to walk on. About four hundred years later the greeks started making pictures of people and animals, and after another couple of centuries, they started shaping and colouring small mosaic pieces so that they could really express these scenes accurately! With pieces sometimes only a few mm in size, mosaics by this stage were as good as paintings for detail! Greeks were known to be mosaic specialists...the residents of Pompeii employed Greek mosaic artists for example. This mosaic shows Neptune with Amphitrite (on the right) and is in nearby Herculaneum,Italy. It is a wall mosaic which uses pieces of glass to give such vivid colours and to reflect the light. BACK
